Investment characteristics Name of the region. Volyn oblast, the oblast capital is Lutsk. Geographical location. The oblast is situated in the northwest Ukraine. It borders to Poland in the west (extension of the frontier is 190 km), Belarus in the north (205 km), Rivne oblast in the east and Lviv oblast in the south. There are 9 border crossings operating in Volyn; four of them are used for goods clearance at the Ukrainian-Polish border. The common border with the CIS and the European Union favours dynamic development of international relations. At present the oblast executes economic co-operation with over 80 countries. A number of well-known in a business world companies like Swedish SKF, Japanese ISUZU, International Corporation NESTLE, German concern Opel work today in Volyn. Area. The area of the Volyn oblast is 20.2 thousand square kilometres, or 3.3 % of the total territory of Ukraine. It stretches from the north towards the south for 187 km, and from the west to the east for 163 km. Unlike other regions, Volyn has a very advantageous transport and geographical position on crossings of significant trade routes. A number of strategic motorways such as Kyiv-Warsaw, Gdansk-Warsaw-Kovel-Odessa (transport corridor Baltic Sea-Black Sea) run through the region. A dense network of railroads (615 kilometres) connects all major industrial sites of the oblast with other cities in Ukraine, CIS and the EU. Resources Volyn has important natural, forest, land and recreational resources. Some big enterprises are functioning in machine-building, chemical and building materials industries. Substantial production potential is available in light industry. An important place in the industrial complex belongs also to wood-working industry. The oblast has a well developed bank network: at present 23 bank institutions operate here. Population. The population of the oblast is 1044.8 thousand people (data by 1 January 2005), or 2.2% of Ukraine’s total population. 50.4 percent of the people are urban dwellers and 49.6 per cent reside in the countryside. The activities undertaken in this region resulted in 107 mil. USD which were invested during 1993-2004. The oblast has considerable experience of co-operation with foreign investors, various foreign funds and programmes of international technical assistance. The Volyn oblast has all the necessary prerequisites for the creation of new enterprises fully belonging to a foreign investor, joint ventures, franchising enterprises, affiliates of trans-national companies, etc. This is favoured by sound competition, absence of monopolies, availability of skilled labour force, and many-sided support rendered to foreign investors by local authorities. Work market also has its advantages and characterised by: - a high level of education and skilled labour - a large offer of labour resources and steady sources for skilled labour replenishment due to a large number of high and vocational schools - good labour management (through local employment agencies) - cheap man power (average payment in the year 2004 consists 123 US dollars per month).
